There was an angry man at church this morning. He was mad because our worship service was too “comfortable”. He was so angry he was shaking, his bolero and giant cowboy hat shaking with pure rage. He called us Presbyterians, pretending to be Pentecostals. I was caught off guard because of the focus. As far as I heard, he didn’t say anything about our liturgy, our teaching, or our sacraments (there was no communion this week, or baptisms); he was only concerned with the songs, the seats, and the way our pastor handled himself.

I usually don’t mind disputes over theological differences. I’ve been in my fair share of bible-based debates/arguments but this was different. This man was super angry because we had padded chairs. how odd is that? It reminds me of the times that I turn on TBN only to find the one-or-another televangelist teaching the holy-living of wealth, and healthy comfort. I don’t draw this comparison because they believe the same thing (this angry man and the televangelist) but because his reaction was so obscure to me. I haven’t been able let this go because his concerns aren’t because of the bible, they were because he was uncomfortable.

The only substantial reason I have heard for limiting our worship-music style to a specific genre, is in the effort to show how hugely holy that time is. How hugely holy our worship of Jesus should be. But I’m not convinced that this should limit our instruments, or the types of chairs we can use for an intermediate building.

I guess I’m more confused than bothered. Things like this just stick with you sometimes.
