I’ve been a fan of the Avant Window Navigator launchbar in Ubuntu since it’s wee days, and have been promoting it’s glory since my first install. Today a friend asked, “Now that AWN is all grown up and has all those new applets, how can I get me some?” here’s my answer.
Prepping: remove your old install of AWN. I haven’t tried any updating process, and if you’ve been using AWN since 7.04 or earlier, i’d just remove it all.
Lets install the gooness!
1st off, if you are using ubuntu with a windows-manager capable of supporting transparency (e.g. compiz, e.g he default fancy animation stuff that has been in use since Fiesty Fawn) and you are not using AWN; where have you been?
you need to add these to your repository list (under System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager>Third Party Sources) and add each line, one at a time.
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main
2nd, once you’ve reloaded your app list, close out of Synaptic Package Manager (because this next step is faster from the Terminal) and run the following command in the terminal.
A recipe i plan to try tonight for dessert. MMM via
Rice Pudding Recipe

Ingredients
* 2 1/2 cups (600 ml) of whole milk
* 1/3 cup (66 grams) of long or short grain white rice
* 1/8 teaspoon salt
* 1 egg
* 1/4 cup (50 grams) dark brown sugar
* 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
* 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
* 1/3 cup (40 grams) raisins
Method
1 In a medium heavy bottomed saucepan, combine milk, rice and salt and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer until the rice is tender, about 20 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
2 In a small mixing bowl, whisk together egg and brown sugar until well mixed. Add a half cup of the rice mixture - a tablespoon at a time - beating to incorporate.
3 Add egg mixture back into the saucepan of rice and milk and stir, on low heat, for 10 minutes or so, until thickened. Be careful not to have the mixture come to a boil at this point. Stir in the vanilla. Remove from heat and stir in the raisins and cinnamon.
Prior to the 2006 general assembly some 10-15 PCA ministers gathered with the concern of the well-being of the PCA. Out of a concern for some missional issues observed in the PCA, a small organization was born named “Conversations about Denominational Renewal”. Their website defines the core topics as:
Renewing Ethos
Renewing Theological Practices
Renewing Worship
Renewing Ecclesiology
Renewing Mission
and to be honest, I really appreciate the way they are addressing the subject. They are very careful to assert that the changes they would like to see are not theological and consider themselves conservative doctrinally. But to say that I can see where there concerns are rooted is an understatement. Though I am not in a position where I can participate in any presbyterian assemblies, I do know (from personal observation) the concerns they are addressing. Anyway, their homepage hosts the lectures from the meeting, but my IT-OCD kicked in and had a hard time seeing everything so discombobulated. (that’s right, how often do you see that word floating around.. heh heh )
The Together For the Gospel conference was just held this year in Louisville. If you have any interest in teaching, the gospel, or Jesus, you should really listen to these lectures. I’ve pulled the links for the 2006 and 2008 conference.

In light of the recent airing of the Star Wars Sextology on spike, I thought it might be nice to draw attention to the rarely aired “Holiday Special” aired just before Episode 6 was released.
There are so many things to warn… er tell you about, but lets just say, grandpa wookie’s “Pleasure Fantasy” is a little creepy…
One of these is a photograph taken by the Hubble space telescope on December 17, 2002, featuring the variable star V838 Monocerotis. The other is the same photograph overlaid with a familiar logo. Can you tell which is which?
There has been some hubub recently about spec work and it’s detriment to the design community. I would say this can apply to many vocations, but a good quick overview of the concern can be seen in the following article, or in more detail from it’s host site. It is definitely a subject to consider seriously.
Spec work is defined as producing a piece for a potential client with no guarantee that your work will be chosen and/or paid for.
When put that way, spec work just doesn’t make sense. I mean, doing the work in the hopes of maybe getting paid for it? Who does that? No one outside of the creative community, that’s for sure. Yet this is becoming a common practice throughout the design industry, and companies are just preying upon the young and inexperienced.
